In my dissertation, Blessings from a Small House, I reflect on the literature and experience of home by combining an examination of four contemporary American writers with a narrative of my experiences in my first house. I build on the theories of Wendell Berry, who argues that "the only thing we have to preserve wildness with is domesticity," and William Cronon, who claims we must "rethink wilderness," by investigating how Chet Raymo, Sandra Steingraber, Rick Bass, and Michael Pollan each draw upon material outside the traditional parameters of nature writing to identify the critical connections between our domestic lives and the health of the planet. I show how our everyday actions are intimately tied to the fate of the natural world and, in turn, our own fate. I argue that notions of "home" can expand far beyond four walls and a front door.
